I was 14 when I experienced my first facial. I’ll never forget the experience because it was so new and exciting. But I’ll also never forget how confused I was at the beginning of that facial because I had no idea what to do or what to expect. If you’ve never experienced a facial before, this blog post is for you! Today on the blog, I’m talking about why you should experience a Customized Facial, how you can prepare for your first appointment, and what you can expect during your first treatment.
Why should you experience a Customized Facial with me?
Customized Facials are not only an opportunity for you to relax and treat yourself, but it’s an opportunity to start your journey towards your best skin! I specialize in results-oriented treatments, and love working with clients who have specific goals for their skin. I believe achieving your best skin is an equal partnership--I’m committed to giving you the best treatments, but you also need to be committed to following a homecare routine between treatments.
How can you prepare for your first appointment?
It’s best to arrive to your appointment with a clean face (no makeup on) and wear comfortable clothes that are easy to change out of. Also, know what skincare products you’re using at home or even bring your current products with you! When you arrive for your appointment, I’ll have you complete consent forms to learn more about your skin before your treatment.
What can you expect during your treatment?
You’ll first change into a spa wrap and get comfortable under the covers of my treatment table. The lights will be off and relaxing music will be playing in the background. I’ll remove any makeup and cleanse your skin, then turn on my magnifying lamp to start my analysis. We’ll talk about your current product routine, your current skin condition, and I’ll ask you what your skin goals are. I’ll then make recommendations for your treatment and suggest a homecare routine. If you have any specific questions for me, don’t be afraid to ask them! After the analysis, I’ll dive into your treatment.
During a treatment, I’ll cleanse your skin again to ensure all makeup is removed. I’ll then apply an enzyme mask, which exfoliates your skin by digesting dead skin cells and breaking down excess oil. After applying the enzyme, you’ll sit under steam for 5-10 minutes. I’ll ask “On a scale of 1 to 10, how tingly does this feel?” I always start with mild enzymes, which typically have a tingle factor of 1-3, on new clients to gauge your skin’s tolerance. After several minutes, I’ll massage over the enzyme to promote circulation and oxygenation.
After the enzyme is removed, I may perform extractions to remove blackheads and clear any clogged pores. I use an ultrasonic spatula, which glides over your skin and essentially vibrates the blackheads right out! This process is virtually painless, but you may feel slight pressure when I use the device.
The remainder of the Customized Facial will depend on your skin type and goals. I may apply peptide serums and infuse them with my ultrasonic spatula, or create a custom blended treatment mask, or massage with cooling globes, or even do a little of everything. A Customized Facial is truly customized to what your skin needs!
What happens after your treatment?
After your treatment, I’ll reiterate what you can be doing at home to take care of your skin between treatments. I have sample sizes of my professional products available, and can put together a customized sample pack for you to take home. You’ll receive an instruction card on how to use the products and I’ll walk you through the routine I’ve suggested. I’ll also make recommendations for treatments going forward, and recommend receiving treatments consistently every 4 to 6 weeks. When you get home after your facial, there’s no need to do your evening skincare routine (unless you apply makeup after your facial, then you definitely need to remove your makeup, cleanse, and do your routine before going to bed!) and I’d also recommend not exfoliating for the next few days following your facial. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure as much as possible.
Still have questions?
I offer complimentary consultations if you would like to come in and discuss your skin goals before scheduling your first treatment. I’m also available for questions through social media, text, or email. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have additional questions!
My wedding is in two weeks! Wedding planning is stressful, but I’m not letting this stress get in the way of self care and taking care of my own skin. I've been consistent with my product routine and treating myself to an Enzyme Treatment once a week to ensure I'll have beautiful skin for my big day. If you're also getting married this Fall, or in the near future, here's how you can prep your skin before your wedding!
Be consistent with your product routine. Professional treatments are important when working towards specific skin goals, but what really matters is how you take care of your skin at home. A basic routine should include a Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturizer both morning and night, and using an Exfoliant two to three times a week. It’s important to make sure you’re using products that are correct for your skin type or skin concerns, otherwise you may end up compromising your skin’s barrier and causing more problems. I also recommend using high quality products that contain a high amount of active ingredients that actually deliver results. Read about Understanding Your Skin Type and Drugstore vs. Professional Products.
Consider professional skincare treatments. If you have specific skin goals you’re working towards before your wedding, I recommend seeing a Licensed Esthetician for professional treatments. Here are the treatments I recommend most for Brides:
Have your brows waxed a week before your wedding. A brow wax will give your brows a flattering shape and get rid of the stray hairs. A fresh set of brows also compliments professional makeup application. Any facial waxing (brows, lip, chin, etc) should not be done less than a week before because the waxed skin will still be fresh and may affect makeup application.
Drink plenty of water and reduce stress. Drinking enough water can help hydrate your skin from the inside out, and reducing stress can help avoid stress-related breakouts before your big day. Take time for yourself before your wedding, you deserve it!
Featuring a Smoked Bourbon enzyme and a cherry infused Vitamin C mask, this facial reminds me of my favorite cocktail! We're actually having an Old Fashioned bar at my wedding (coming up in 4 weeks!) because I love this cocktail so much, and it's just kind of a Wisconsin thing.
Bourbon is packed with antioxidants that are derived from the French Oak casks the alcohol matures in. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and reduce the harmful effects of oxidative stress within the skin. Cherries are a great source of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Vitamin C as a skincare ingredient can brighten, hydrate, and protect your skin from environmental damage.
For $75 ($95 value), you'll be treated to this 60 minute Limited Edition Facial, a brow shaping and wax, and Bourbon macaroons from Almond & Ivy Bakery in De Pere! This special is available ONLY September 10-21st.

It’s important to understand your skin type so you can understand what products and treatments are best for you. Products designed for dry skin may not be effective for oily skin, just like treatments for oily skin are not designed for dry skin. Using products not suited for your true skin type can also compromise your skin’s barrier and cause damage in the long run.
There are four skin types—Normal, Dry, Oily, and Combination—and each are easy to identify by their common characteristics.
It’s also important to understand the difference between skin types and skin conditions. Skin types are genetically determined, and refer to the general characteristics of your skin—such as pore size, oil production, and overall complexion. Skin conditions are influenced by both internal and external factors, and are temporary—such as acne, sun damage, and sensitized skin. Knowing this difference will also help determine what products and treatments are best for you.
If you’re still unsure about your skin type, contact me for a free Skincare Consultation. I’ll analyze your skin, recommend products and treatments best suited for you, and work with you to achieve your healthiest skin.
