Every client who asks for skincare product recommendations will probably notice that I never recommend drugstore products. This isn't because I only want to sell *my* professional skincare products. It’s because there’s actually a big difference between drugstore and professional skincare products.
Drugstore products are formulated with low quality ingredients, contain low concentrations of active ingredients, and are often generic formulas marketed to “all skin types.” Drugstore products are also made in large batches, so more fillers and preservatives are added to extend the shelf life. Synthetic fragrances, colors, and dyes are also added to improve the look and smell of the products, even though these ingredients are known skin irritants and pore cloggers. These products are easily accessible through drugstores, department stores, direct sales companies, or even online because no skincare education or background is required in order to sell the products to consumers. Drugstore products may seem affordable upfront, but you’ll be spending more money in the long run because you either need a lot of product or a lot of time to see any results.
Professional products are formulated with high quality ingredients, contain high concentrations of active ingredients, and are designed to target and improve specific skin concerns. Professional products are made in small batches, which ensures the freshness and quality of each bottle. Professional product formulations also avoid using synthetic fragrances, colors, and dyes because they’re known skin irritants. Because these skin irritating ingredients are avoided, you’re less likely to develop sensitivities or reactions to the products. Professional products are only available through Licensed Estheticians who are trained to understand how the skin functions and how different ingredients deliver specific results. Plus, most brands require additional education before we’re able to sell their products to our clients. Professional products may seem costly, especially compared to drugstore products, but they’re reasonably priced for the quality ingredients inside. You’ll spend less money in the long run because you receive faster results with less product used.
I always tell my clients that achieving their best skin doesn’t just rely on what I can do in the treatment room. The skincare products you use at home make a big difference, and using professional products allow you to take professional results home with you. Consider professional products as an investment for your healthiest skin.
I’ve had acne for most of my life. Yep, I’m a licensed skincare professional and I struggle with acne. It’s ironic isn’t it?
My acne first started in sixth grade. As a teen, I tried literally every drugstore product or routine designed for acne. ProActive, Neutrogena, Clearasil, Acne Free. None of it worked. I skipped moisturizing in hopes of controlling oil, I applied “spot treatments” all over my face, and I used clay masks frequently, but now I realize I was only making things worse. I assumed the breakouts would stop after highschool, but acne followed me into adulthood. As an adult, I became desperate and tried prescription acne medication. It felt like a miracle at first, but after a month I experienced adverse side effects. I felt defeated and was ready to accept having acne for the rest of my life.
Then earlier this year, I completed intense training with the Face Reality Acne Clinic and became a Certified Acne Specialist. Beauty school taught me about the four grades of acne, but Face Reality dug deeper and defined different types of acne within the four grades. It also discussed the root cause of acne, common myths, and why prescription acne medications are typically not successful long-term. My skin is the best it’s ever been because of the Face Reality training and their products. It’s still not perfect, but it’s been a huge improvement.
Trust me when I say I know what it’s like to feel embarrassed, frustrated, and self-conscious because of your skin. My personal experience with acne is what made me become an Esthetician in the first place, and I pursued the Acne Specialist training because I wanted to help others like myself. I feel more comfortable in my skin than ever before, and you deserve to feel like that too. You deserve to feel confident in your skin, and to love your skin. We all deserve clear skin.
