Myth: The Sun Helps Acne

Acne Myth Sun Exposure and Tanning Help Acne.jpg

No, the sun will NOT help your acne!  The sun actually aggravates acne, and causes so much more damage to your skin in general.

The sun emits two types of UV rays that are harmful to your skin—UVA and UVB rays.  UVA rays go deeper into your skin and damage DNA, break down collagen fibers, and can lead to skin cancer.  UVA rays are the rays that cause premature aging and wrinkles.  UVB rays damage the outermost layers of the skin and cause tanning or sunburns.  A tan is actually your body’s response to UV damage!

The sun damages healthy skin cells, increases inflammation, worsens acne scars, and prevents your breakouts from healing.  It’s important to protect your skin daily with sunscreen, especially if you have acne!
